THE IMPORTANCE OF REFEREEING IN A SHOOTING SPORTS COMPETITION.

The referee’s work is fundamental to the success of the competition. That’s the opinion of Wissam Elias Maalouf, CBTE Rifle and Pistol refereeing director and head referee of the ISSF World Cup Rio de Janeiro, which will be held from April 9th to 19th. Lebanese by birth, but naturalized as a Brazilian citizen, Wissam, 51, started at shooting sport as an athlete in 1998. Two years later he became a manager and, in 2001, a referee, after taking part of an international course during a competition in Fortaleza.

With authority and international experience, Wissam highlights the importance of holding, for the second time in the last three years, the ISSF World Cup Rio de Janeiro, at Centro Militar de Tiro Esportivo.

“Since it will be in Brazil, the competition will bring visibility, more exposure in the media, greater knowledge of our sport, in addition to attracting new practitioners. Furthermore*,* it touches all sectors of the sport: administrative, athletes and refereeing. Everyone will have the experience of practicing and participating in a competition held at home. The maintenance of the shooting polygon will also be updated. In the specific case of refereeing, we will have the opportunity to exchange experience, in addition to being more updated”, says the director and head referee.

The ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol Rio de Janeiro will have the participation of 44 referees, 33 Brazilians and 11 foreigners in the most diverse functions: Jury Members or Ranger Officers distributed in four stands: 10m, 25m, 50m and finals, which are usually divided into teams of four to five referees per sector. There will also be referees responsible for controlling the equipment and for calculating and publishing the results.
